Hi everyone,
What are the songs of the revolution today? I am old enough to remember the protest songs of the 1960’s and 1970’s which inspired an entire generation of young people who wanted to see real change in the war in Vietnam and a desire to revolutionize the entire political system. Quite a big ask, but not without some clout. These protests songs galvanized youth across the world, speeding on from the Civil Rights Movement that was embodied in Dr. Martin Luther King, a revolution that is still being felt today and in which many Jews participated (duh!) and which movement has been ill tampered with to its detriment.
The Rebbe Les Aron Gosling was one of those inspired by this “revolution”. We could stand up, refuse, fight them, scarred though we may be and we joined multitudes of others over time who would not submit to the lash. That’s how we felt in those days.
The Rebbe was the first successful conscientious objector in Australia. It cost him every penny he owned and more besides. The love of some family members and friends was turned aside and white feathers arrived in the mail. Shame was the order of the day when such a stand had to be taken.
But he won, and it changed the course of many others who could then fight the warmongers who had established a battle, not a war in a country from which they should have stayed well away. We both voted back then for a Labour government under the renowned Australian PM Goff Whitlam (like him or lump him) who brought an end to the Australian “participation” in this illegal “war”.
Yes, the revolution was deep within us and we craved a better system that we could all get behind. During that turbulent time period a well known singer/musician by the name of John Lennon of Beatles fame, wrote a song about revolution. He posited that these lyrics somehow reflected the “movement” of where the youth of today were at in their displeasure and revolt about the state of…well…everything it seemed.
The first line of this little ditty goes something like this: “You say you want a revolution, we-ll you know, we don’t wanna change the world.” But you did John Lennon! You and the other mop-heads as they were called changed the world. You, John Lennon said that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus! Wow! That got you into a whole lot of hot water with the Americans, didn’t it. Lots of explaining was necessary. Here, in Australia we laughed, John was right and in the context in which he said it, he was certainly correct. The revolution was already in place, he was instrumental in delivering the message through songs, even if this particular piece actually means more than what it says on the surface. He was very instrumental in changing the thinking of many, but he became too dangerous to continue something that was not ready to be manifested. RIP John Lennon, you cheered up my childhood immensely.
Singing gets through, give the people a revolutionary lyric and a good beat and they’ll be there, banging their drums, singing their anthems, changing the world - for better instead of worse, hopefully. Even within the schools, John Lennon’s song “Imagine” is played to the students and learnt. Sing children! The revolution that now isn’t has come to you to carry on. There’s no heaven, no hell, as the lyrics say, just the Empirical Self to save the world because G-d seems to have abandoned His Creation.
However, the drumbeat of the real revolution still remains, it calls us all to participate and bring about a better world for all by teaching the children the real reason they are alive today.
When it came to the revolution the Rebbe and I were called to put our revolutionary ideas into a Work for YeHoVaH. It was He who was always changing the world, His revelation of His revolution was more exciting than marching covered in chicken blood in the Moratorium marches of the 1960’s. It was more than pasting up posters over the CBD of Sydney in the middle of the night (yes, we were on fire back then). It was the blood of the greatest revolutionary of all time that was to cover us. We were to march with His soldiers carrying our own crosses and keeping our eyes on the end goals.
YeHoVaH says: “Come, join My revolution. The outcome is stupendous and the rewards are literally, out of this world.”
Here’s some revolutionary songs to get your feet tapping and your heart thumping. Enjoy! And join the Messiah is coming revolution, folks, Father wants you to step up to the plate.
